The renewable energy market has been expanding extremely rapidly throughout the world thanks to strong political support, growing public interest in preserving the environment and improving technology.

With over 120 GW of installed capacity worldwide, wind energy is the second largest source of renewable energy after large hydro. Wind has been experiencing rapid growth, rising by an average rate of c.30% per year since 2000.

In Europe, wind was the largest contributor to new power capacity in 2008 with 8.4 GW. Total new wind capacity worldwide exceeded 27.1GW, of which 8.4GW in the United States.

Growth is expected to continue to be significant all around the world, with over 490GW installed by 2015, e.g. more than current nuclear capacity.
